Gretchen Walsh continued her outstanding form at the World Short Course Championships in Budapest on Friday as she broke the world record for the 100m butterfly, AFP reported.
Competing in the heats, the 21-year-old American clocked 53.24 seconds, smashing the previous record of 54.05sec set by Canada's Margaret Mac Neil in 2022.
According to AFP, it was Walsh's fifth record since the start of the week and her fourth in the individual events.
Walsh got the competition off to a flying start, breaking the 50m butterfly record twice in the same day on Tuesday, before helping the American women's relay to win and set the record in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
On Thursday, she also set the fastest 100m medley time in history, bettering her own record.
Earlier, Canadian swimming star Summer McIntosh powered to her second gold medal of the world short course championships in Budapest on Thursday with a world record in the women's 200m butterfly, added AFP.
The 18-year-old won three Olympic titles in Paris earlier this year, in the 200m butterfly, 200m medley and 400m medley.
She added her second gold of the week after also winning the 400m freestyle on Tuesday by winning in 1min 59.32secs, beating American Regan Smith by 1.68secs.
"I wouldn't say I train a lot in the butterfly," McIntosh said. "But I have a great ability to concentrate."
Australia's Elizabeth Dekkers took the bronze.
